So we ought not to undertake the project posed by Sheldon’s book, indeed by 1 Peter 2:21—the task of following “in his steps”—too lightly or in such a way as to think that we have thereby been insulated from the wider human adventure, from the human condition. Jesus is not the way unless you are lost, even as Jesus is not the answer unless you have a question. I am happy enough to call this the “postmodern condition,” to use Lyotard’s phrase.
